What is Hygiene and Sanitation Promotion?

Providing access to clean water only eliminates water borne illness by 25% according to the WHO.  To have a long-lasting health impact, we are promoting proper water storage to keep the clean water clean, encouraging hand-washing with soap, and spreading awareness of the overall importance of clean water and sanitation.  The Akuapem Community Development Programme will be continuing this community development for a minimum of one year while members of ADI will conduct a yearly follow-up to assess the permanence of the program.

WaterAid, an International NGO and a partner with Project ACWA, uses the Participatory Hygiene And Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) method to promote hygiene in communities – Hygiene promotion activities are carried out as part of the initial entry activities and also along various stages of the entire life cycle of the project in two main forms

– community and household sessions. These sessions are participatory in nature and enables members of the beneficiary communities to identify, prioritize and discuss their own bad personal and environmental hygiene practices. The hygiene promotion activities are carried out based on the Six Cluster Framework developed by WaterAid and Partners covering water hygiene, food hygiene, personal hygiene, household hygiene, environmental hygiene, and safe disposal of human excreta.
